If Sunday’s pre-season game against the DFW Hawks is any indication, the Garland Wranglers should do just fine in the Mesquite Indoor Football League this season.
The Wranglers outlasted the Hawks 38-27 before a large crowd at the Mesquite Rodeo Arena in their first live competition of 2017, which was organized as a benefit game for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Sunday was also the first indoor game experience for more than half of Garland’s roster – 14 of the 25 players that dressed – but many of them impressed as if they had been there before.
“Being completely new to the indoor game, with minimal preparation, they performed above and beyond the coaching staff’s expectations,” Wranglers owner Alan Montgomery told Developmental Football USA.
“Tight end turned running back Clayton Sullivent, who had played that position his entire football career, sent the crowd roaring with a two rushing touchdown performance.”
Rookie quarterback Le’Ondre Wilson also had two visits to the end zone in his debut, with a touchdown toss to Darius Tolbert to go with another touchdown on the ground.
Tolbert, who was the leading receiver in the MIFL last year, also hauled in a touchdown pass from back-up quarterback Cody Court.
Lance Gettenmeier, who plays both tackle and tight end, caught five passes for critical first downs and came up just inches shy from his first receiving touchdown.
“Lance came to the Wranglers as a defensive end, at 6-foot-7,” Montgomery said. “He had a powerful impact on offense, as well as two sacks on defense.”
Defensively, safety Jeremiah Moore also won the crowd over with three interceptions on the night, including one he returned 35 yards for a Garland touchdown.
“It was his first start playing football,” Montgomery said. “Jeremiah played basketball for most of his career. At 21, and 6-foot-4, he was clocked at the Dallas Marshals tryout at an astonishing 4.4 in the 40-yard dash. He has decided to play football and started off with a bang.”
The Wranglers look to carry this momentum over into their season opener against the Arlington Longhorns, Feb. 26 at 11:30 a.m.
